Why choose Thorpe House Nursery?
Thorpe House Nursery provides a happy and gentle introduction to our youngest boys and provides 21 places for boys aged 3 to 4 years old. The Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and is an integral part of the Pre-Prep.
The ethos in the Nursery is underpinned by respect and understanding for all the boys, as well as a commitment to the highest standards of education. We foster a love of learning and traits such as a positive self-image, confidence, independence and responsibility are highly valued and actively promoted. Our Nursery provides an inclusive, happy, caring and stimulating educational environment.
The curriculum is delivered through a combination of child-initiated and adult-led activities. Children learn through exciting and stimulating topics that incorporate the seven areas of learning and development of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This programme encompasses personal, social and emotional development; communication and language; literacy; mathematics; understanding of the world, physical development and expressive arts and design. The key principles which underpin the curriculum are the belief that each boy is unique; positive relationships are crucial and the provision is enabling. This forms the foundation of our curriculum.
Learning in the Nursery takes place through a topic/theme based approach alongside continuous provision in regular areas. A range of teaching styles are used throughout the year and will include individual, small group, large group and whole class. Structured situations with focus activities will be in operation, but there will also be times when there are more free flow activities. Nursery children use the outside area, weather permitting. Activities include the adventure playground, the early year’s garden, outdoor ride-on vehicles, sand, water, and investigative work.
