Modern Foreign Languages play an important part within the curriculum at Thorpe House School, encouraging an understanding of different cultures and traditions as well as inculcating life-long language learning skills. In a world which has become increasingly competitive and international, studying a very widely spoken foreign language such as French or Spanish can make a huge difference to our pupils' future life chances.
At Thorpe House, we offer boys the opportunity to study French in KS2, ensuring that they develop the appropriate skills at this early and all-important stage. At KS3, students then have the chance to learn both French and Spanish. This allows them to see the connections between the two romance languages, identify patterns which are similar in English and explore basic etymology. At this stage, they develop learning skills which are proven to support their learning throughout the curriculum.
At GCSE, all students study French and this gives a sense of continuity to their learning. Spanish is also an increasingly popular and very useful choice at GCSE for many students.
We are fortunate at Thorpe House to have multi-media facilities where students can practise their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. All our classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art interactive white boards but we have a whole range of other resources at our disposal to promote effective teaching and learning. Our small class sizes mean that students receive much greater individual attention from teachers and have far greater and more frequent exposure to the target language.
We take contact with the target language countries seriously as this is an important part of any language student’s experience. Links have recently been forged with a school in Terrassa in Spain with a view to conducting an exchange or visit in the near future. Links with our partner school in France are already well-established with visits taking place regularly. In addition, students are encouraged to sign up to summer visits with CERAN or home study visits to enhance their spoken French and Spanish.
