Leavers' Destinations

Most boys remain at Thorpe House to complete their GCSEs, but for those boys who take their 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance exams, there are many options available to them.

11+

At age 11, the majority if those boys who leave go to boys’ Grammar Schools for example:

  • Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, Amersham
  • Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe
  • John Hampden Grammar School, High Wycombe.

A few other move to co-educational grammar schools for example:

  • Chesham Grammar School
  • Burnham Grammar School.

13+

At age 13 a small number of boys move to a variety of different senior independent schools including:

  • Merchant Taylor’s School, Northwood
  • Berkhamsted School
  • The Oratory School, Reading
  • Bradfield College
  • Eton College
  • Shiplake College
  • Downside College.

AFTER GCSES

At age 16 our boys have plenty of options available to them for the next stage of their education. Local grammar schools offer places at sixth form level and the local Sixth Form colleges all have very excllent reputations. In a typical year about 65-70% of our 16+ leavers move into a state grammar school

Additionally, the local independent day schools and the majority of boarding schools are more than pleased to admit boys into their sixth forms and in recent years 16+ leavers have moved to the following settings :

  • Wellington College
  • Berkhamsted School
  • Chalfonts Community College
  • Licensed Victuallers' School
  • Amersham College
  • Henley College
  • Hemel Hempstead School
  • Direct Employment.
