On-going units: Reading, comprehension, spelling, hand-writing, grammar, speaking and listening

Creative writing; poems from models, writing a story linked to reading, writing an account from a character’s viewpoint, making an information book, tongue twisters,

Year 4

On-going units: Reading, comprehension, spelling, handwriting, grammar, speaking and listening

Creative writing; investigating an issue, writing an alternative ending, writing a newspaper report, letter writing, writing critically about an issue, writing an advertisement, writing haikus.

Year 5

On-going: Comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

General Creative Writing

Explanatory texts, stories and poems from a variety of cultures, persuasive writing, choral and performance poetry.

Year 6

Ongoing: Comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Emphasis on sentence construction.

Introduction to Shakespeare

Writing and performing plays they have written themselves.

Beginning to understand speaking and listening skills.

Year 7

History of Language - a range of texts from the last one thousand years to explore language change over time. It provides opportunities to explore the vast vocabulary of English, how words emerge and are created, slang and dialect, and the need to select language appropriate to audience in a range of contexts

Travel writing unit -  looking at the conventions of the genre and the different types of texts that exist within it, including instructional texts, recount texts and evaluative texts – students read such texts in this unit and are tasked with writing their own.

Year 8

Lord of The Flies – Novel Study

Setting up a company - This unit explores a range of writing and speaking for different purposes, based around the task of identifying and developing a new product. It centres around persuasion and report-writing, with particular emphasis on identifying audience and purpose, planning, structure, paragraph structure, sentence variety, language choice, and effective delivery.

Year 9

Novel Work – GCSE Preparatory work on analysis and interpretation of a novel – Of Mice and Men / Animal Farm

Year 10

Completion of any outstanding CA units.

CA for Lit (Shakespeare and Contemporary Drama) 5ET03

Year 11

Completion of any outstanding CA units.

English Language Unit Examination – Mice and Men / Writing Task - 5EN02
